CMU Prof Hartman Visits KSU

      

Professor Dr. John Hartman, a faculty member of Central Michigan University (CMU), pays a ten-day visit   to King Saud University as of Saturday, says Dr. Ali Al-Karni, Director of Al-Jazirah Newspaper Chair for International Journalism. He will deliver two lectures: the modern mainstreams of international journalism and USA civil community institutions. He will run two training sessions on journalism skills and e-paper for postgraduates and Al-Jazirah Newspaper staff.

 

In statements on Professor Hartman’s visit, Dr. Al-Karni said, “Professor Hartman’s visit is of extensive significance to KSU; it is by a professor specialized in journalism. He has written many books and compiled hundreds of articles on the USA press. He is to meet a galaxy of faculty members of mass communication department and some university staff from other departments.”

 

“He has an extensive experience in journalism and conducts studies on journalism development. He will enrich Al-Jazirah staff with the professional, journalistic aspects. He is to meet Khalid Al-Malik, Al-Jazirah Editor-in-Chief, and some members of the editorial staff. He will conduct some researches serving the chair objectives”, Al-Karni added.

 

Profile of John Hartman

 

Professor Hartman earned his PhD on Interpersonal and public communication in 1986; his MA on Radio, TV, and Films on 1967, and his B.S. on journalism in 1976.

 

Hartman earned fellowships from Direct Marketing Educational Institute, Poynter Institute for Media Studies, and American press Institute. He has held a number of academic posts; currently he is professor stipend, 2006; associate professor, 1988; promoted to assistant professor, 1986, appointed as instructor, 1984.

 

Hartman worked for a galaxy of newspapers and magazines, companies: Free Press as a columnist, an a.m. New York as consultant; Herlad, as interim editor, Chronicle as a consultant, USA Today Consultant, Marion Star copyeditor and reports, Norwalk reflector as an acting managing editor.

The professor wrote books, foremost of which are: The USA Way 2 The Future, 2002, and The USA Today Way: A candid look at the national newspaper’s first decade 1982-1992, self-published in 1992.

Hartman wrote tens of articles: “USA Today Pioneered Cool Ink”; “Assessing USA Today As 25th Anniversary Approaches”; “Immodest Proposal for 2007: Put Oprah on Page One Every Day”; “A plan to take Toledo out of the shadows”; “Reaching Out to Young Adult Readers” “Influence of USA Today on College Newspapers”; “USA Today and Young-Adult Readers: Can a New-Style Newspaper Win Them Back?”.

Hartman was awarded grants of $5000 from CMU alum David Borough to support research, Fall 2007; FRCE grant to present convention paper, Fall 2006; Sabbatical, Spring 1998, to write of The USA Today Way 2 the Future.                             

Hartman got award Notable mention for Poem, Toledo City Paper, 2005; Eagle Awards from Bowling Green FFA, 1998,  First Place , Public Service, Best of Ganett,1991, for series titled” Half –Penny Opera” on sales tax issue.
